Spam is the one thing which is hated by every site owner; be it a blogger or a membership site owner. A membership site’s strength is its users. Having a high number of users on a site surely takes a lot of time and efforts. However, some of the membership sites may see a sudden increase in the number of users. Most of the beginner site owners believe that this is good for their website and will help their site to grow, but that is completely wrong.
Though there is a chance that those users might be genuine, in most cases, they are only spammers who join the website to spread spam. Building up organic user list surely takes some time, and in most of the cases, it is not a sudden job. If the number of users on your membership users suddenly increases, then it is a significant sign of spam registrations. To help you get rid of these spammy listings, here we present you with some of the methods to stop them.
#1 Stopping Spam Registrations via Stop Spammers Plugin
In this process, the first thing you need to do is install and activate the Stop Spammers Spam Prevention plugin on your WordPress site. All you have to do is head over to the WordPress admin dashboard and visit the Plugins> Add New page. Here you need to look out for the desired plugin and hit the Install Now button. Upon successful installation, make sure to click on the Activate Plugin link or else you will not be able to use it.
Once you have successfully installed and activated the plugin, you need to head over to your admin dashboard and navigate to the Stop Spammers> Protections Options page. Here you can see all the necessary configurations of the plugin. The plugin works out of the box, so there is no need to make any changes. If you still feel that you need to make changes, then you can do that on this page. After making all the changes, you need to make sure that you click on that Save button to keep the changes.
This plugin will block all the suspicious hosts and blocks them from registering on your site. However, the downside of this plugin is that sometimes it may lock you out of your WordPress admin panel. In order to fix this problem, the first thing you need to do is log in to your FTP client and open the WordPress root directory. Here you can see all the necessary files and folders, but you need to open the wp-content> Plugins> Stop Spammer Registrations. In this folder, you need to look out for the stop-spammer-registrations.php file and rename it to stop-spammer-registrations.locked. Now the plugin will be deactivated from your site. You have to perform this process every time this plugin locks you out of the admin area.
If you do not want to use this process because of the issue that it comes with, then you can opt for the other method which is completely bug-free and will protect your website.
#2 Stopping Spam Registrations via WPForms
WPForms is the most extensively used plugin for creating different types of forms on a WordPress website. However, it also lets you block spammy registrations from your site. The first thing you need to do is install and activate this plugin on your site. This is a premium plugin so you will have to pay a small amount to obtain this plugin. After making the payment, you will be presented with the ZIP file of this plugin. Now log in to your WordPress admin dashboard and head over to the Plugins> Add New page. Click on the Upload Plugin button and the WordPress will begin its installation. Once the installation completes, make sure activate to the plugin.
After activating the plugin, you need to head back to the WordPress admin dashboard and navigate to the WPForms> Settings page. Enter the license key which you can obtain from the WPForms account and click on the Verify Key to start using it.
Once you have authenticated your account, you need to visit the WPForms> Add-ons page from the admin panel and look out for the User Registration Addon. Now click on the Install Addon button, and hit the activation link to use the addon.
Upon activating the add-on, you need to open the WPForms> Add a New page where you need to create a new User Registration Form. Add all the necessary fields and customizations to the form, and click on the Save button. Now you need to open the plugin settings and click on the User Registration tab. Look out for the User Activation Method and select the desired method from the drop-down menu. The plugin provides you two options, either you can choose from the admin approval method, or you can go with the user email method. Once you have decided the settings, you need to click on the Save button to keep the changes.
Now that you have made the user registration form, it is time to add this form to a post or page. If you want to add this form to a post, then all you have to do is visit the Posts> Add Posts from the admin dashboard and look out for the post in which you want to add this form.
Now click on the Edit button corresponding the post and press the Add Form button. Select the newly created user registration form and hit the Add Form button. Once you see a shortcode in the text of the post, you need to click on the Publish button to keep the changes. You can now visit your website to see the form in action.
These were the two best methods to stop spam registrations on your WordPress. Both of the methods will get the job done, but the first method is a little buggy. If you are comfortable with that, then you can go with the first process.
